In 1978, farmers in San Juan del Rio Coco, Nicaragua, formed CORCASAN to pool resources, share costs, and sell coffee. In 1994, Luisa Gonzalez became its first employee, managing technical assistance, commercialization, and member services. Facing financing challenges, CORCASAN achieved Fair Trade Certification in 2005, enabling international sales to major importers in the U.S. and Europe. This brought financing for pre-harvest costs, community development, scholarships, training, and greater opportunities for women, who now comprise over half the staff.
